The legislation raised the maximum penalty for contraventions to up to €20m (£17.5m) or 4% of global turnover - whichever is the greater. We have already see the ICO fine its first offender - British Airways - which was slapped with a £183m penalty for a breach of customer data. The very next day, a £99 million fine was handed hotel chain Marriott for failing to protect personal data contained in guest records.
